Our last stop for the day was Dragon-i in Centrepoint. DL wanted the ramen there. I was still full so I won’t be ordering my favourite ma po tofu rice. Was flipping the menu a couple of times, ended up with the common stuff, Shanghai dumplings and a cup of mango pomelo drink. Since there were 4 dumplings, I thought we each could have 1 of it.

The mango pomelo was a nice mix, but the pomelo was a tad too bitter to my liking. It looks really nice on presentation wise, but I don’t think I’ll have another one. Maybe only for mango lovers.

I met up with KKMS tonight for a dinner, as a little celebration for my birthday. At first we were to dine in Dragon-i, but the place was packed with crowds and the queue was long. She was very hungry, so I suggested Canton-i. I recalled the previous time I was at Canton-i, I saw Shanghai dumplings on their menu. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite so on my this visit.

Firstly, my mixed fruits drink was kinda nice, though the dragon fruit was dominant over the other 2 fruits in term of taste and look. It still have a slight hint of guava though, while the watermelon was totally oblivious. The tau fu fah was nice though, despite the lack of brown sugar. I was given honey as condiments, though it was good without the honey because the soya taste was quite heavy in it. I’ve never tasted such prominent soya taste ever in a tau fu fah. Rather worth the cost of it for soya lover, like DL.

My deep fried noodle looked good, but it doesn’t really tasted that nice. The middle part where it was soaked in the sauce was soggy while the crispy part was only a small portion of it. I didn’t have the prawns as I was on my strict diet, sort of. KKMS told me that the prawns were very crispy and fresh. I figured it would be. The sauce was a tad sourish and mildly sweetened yet quite salty. Though I won’t have another serving of this noodle for as long as I remembered it wasn’t that good. It looked and sounded nice though. Not sure how was KKMS’s dumpling noodle, all she ever said was, “very full, very full”.

The poached vegetable was plain vanilla. The vegetable was very crunchy though. But I had to have more vege for my balanced diet, so I had like at least 75% of it. Then the BBQ pork. It looked delicious and seducing me to eat it with its glimmering glow. The sauce was sweetened and quite nice, but the pork itself was nowhere as good as Canton Fare‘s. The meat was well marinated but it was very salty. Not what I’d expect from BBQ pork though. Then the delicious roasted pork. I’ve heard much about it on how good it was. Though, the last time I had it during lunch, it was only mediocre. This time, it was really good. The fats melt in my mouth, though the inner part was very salty.

Finally, my complains; My mixed fruits drink was served last. I ordered the dragon fruit, guava and kiwi mix at first. Then later they told me they ran out of kiwi, so I settled for watermelon. KKMS’s ordered a cup of tong sui which ended up with plain soya bean because they ran out of stock too. Then the poached vegetable. I ordered the “yau mak” at first. Then we were told they ran out of “yau mak”, hence I asked for “choi dum”. And again, they ran out of “choi dum”. It was then I had to settle for less than desirable “choi sum”. How could a premium restaurant such as this keep running out of food which shown on the menu?

PG was in town and he asked for dinner yesterday. Unfortunately, I had to join my colleagues for dinner because we just came off from OH’s office. So today I bring the lady out for lunch instead. He said he wanted something nice, premium perhaps. Definitely not something roadside or non-air conditioned place. I can’t think of anything for lunch, I asked him to ring DL up to see if he has any idea.

DL was too KO’ed from the early morning hike in FRIM, he said he can’t think of anything because his brain was sucked dry by those leeches. Anyway, I suggested that we go to Solaris since PG never been there. And perhaps we could try out Ole-Ole Bali. Yes, it’s my day off on strict diet this weekends.

Unfortunately, when we were there, DL said he heard of few not so pleasant comments on Ole-Ole Bali. Then I suggested to go for Michelangelo’s instead, since someone recommended the vongole pasta there. Well, the price tag definitely fits what PG wanted, though there were rarely any air cond because we were seated on the outside. All for the sake of nicer photos.

If I didn’t see any aglio olio on the menu, I would’ve definitely go for the vongole pasta. Seeing that I’m a sucker for aglio olio, I can’t help it but to order it. Instead of spaghetti, I asked for linguine. On the other hand, DL was tempting PG with his cup of Guinness Stout while PG can barely hold it.

... apparently, I was allowed to order a cup of fruit mix. Apple and watermelon juice mix. Not the 3rd type though.

My cup of fresh fruit juice was rather exceptional. Yes, it was exceptionally bad. Look at how badly diluted it was. 90% water and 10% fruit stuffs. It was RM9 a cup, I bet they use Evian mineral water on this. My aglio olio linguine was really bad. Aside from the rather non-existent aglio olio scent, the linguine was rather hard, almost uncooked. The taste, it was bland and I can’t feel any garlic taste at all. DL was complaining north, east, south and west on that spoonful of linguine that he had. RM18.90 for a plate of nothingness. Very good!

PG gave me a clam and mussel. They were both juicy, though the clam was rather tasteless. It was mildly cook, so it was tender. I guess that’s why the vongole pasta was good. The mussel was sweet though. DL complained that the seafood was not fresh on PG’s pasta. That’s what PG said, the prawns were not fresh. And my comment? The sauce tasted like kerosene.

Somehow, the pizza was nice though. The fragrance was good and the taste was above average. Better than most of the pizzas out there. DL whom was lactose intolerant was liking it. He said he took the piece without those cheese on the topping. Yeah right, he totally sucking on the molten cheese the middle layer. Though the pepperoni was rather lacking but the nice fragrance and taste made up for the sparing ingredients.

With such pricey tag, I guess I won’t be seeing the lights of Michelangelo’s anytime soon. Though we found out that, on 3rd June (or onward?), Michelangelo’s is having 50% off promotion on their main course, provided payment is made with Public Bank’s credit cards. Perhaps I might stop by for… a vongole spaghetti.

After our fights during lunch, we adjourned to Haagen-Dazs lunch. This time, I’ll be the 1 paying the bill, since he got the earlier bill in Canton Fare. It’s so unfair! He suggested to go Baskin-Robbins at first but I told him why not we go Haagen-Dazs instead? I heard from AC that there’s a HD in Solaris too. DL said it’s just across the street. It was good too because I’m not a fan of Baskin-Robbins.

The store was just across the street, about 50 metres from our location. Haagen-Dazs is currently having buffet promotion at RM33.90++ per pax. I tempted DL to go for it. He was worried that he couldn’t wallop that much.

Oh well, next times perhaps. I proceed to check out the new menu on the pedestal. First thing I spotted was the Chocoholic. I pointed to him that I found his favourite. Then I saw the fruit ice-cream. DL said it was passion fruit being used as garnish as show on the menu. Since I’ve never actually had the fruit itself, I thought I’d wanna try it.

I’ve got no idea how would the deco on our ice-creams turn out to be, because the photos on the menu were rather… abstract. But for certain, you’d get what’s describe on the menu. So, do read the text. DL being a chocolate lover, he was super satisfied with his Chocoholic which came with a cone as well. I was glad he does because it’s my treat.

While I sacrificed my Macadamia Nuts over Mango Tango, hoping to get some passion fruits as garnish, I was fairly disappointed. All I got was sliced strawberry and banana! Gosh! And I had to go through the 3-year-old-kid-pointing-at-the-menu-to-order ordeal hoping to get some passion fruits on my plate and all I got was… banana! The staff nodded that I’d get what’s (I swear I was pointing very clearly on the cut up passion fruit) on the menu. Perhaps what he meant was that I could have the menu.

Anyhow, my mango ice-cream wasn’t all bad. It has passion fruits flavour in it. It tasted better than the ordinary mango. The other scoop that I get was chocolate. Plain chocolate without chips in it. Since when did Haagen-Dazs provides plain chocolate ice-cream?

Anyway, the bill came up to RM62+, around the same figure as our lunch’s bill. A decent dessert? Yes! A big YES indeed.

I know this probably sounds gay, anyway…

My ex-colleague, HGY, showed me this place the night before. She said the place has very very very nice fried siew yuk (roasted pork), and some other varieties too. Later, I showed it to DL and asked if he’s been there. Since he stayed nearby, I thought he would’ve know the place quite well.

Turns out he hasn’t heard of the place. So we decided to gate crash the place and hopefully get some good tasting Chinese style stir fry food. My first and last fried siew yuk was a couple of years back in Taman Tun, which was recommended by KC. It was really nice too, served with wanton noodle. The meat was basically coated in sauce like those on BBQ pork.

Anyway, when were were there, the place was closed. I guess it opens for the industrial workers whom work around that area. Then DL recommended Canton Fare as contingency plan, in case the place not opened. He said he saw the place the week before and been wanting to try it out. Hence we headed straight to Solaris Mont Kiara. It was my first time here as well. Been hearing about it since the spawn of Tenji, yet I haven’t the initiative to go check it out. I wonder how it fares against Canton-i.

At first, I thought it was probably related to Canton-i in some way. Aside from the similar name, it was different as DL said the dishes offered were different. We were asked what do we wanted to drink even before we make our order. A choice of 2 tong sui and Chinese tea. I picked the longan snow fungus while DL went with hot Chinese tea.

I let DL made the choice while I was busy setting my WB on my camera. He ordered the roasted duck and BBQ pork with a belacan style water spinach to go with our rice. We were offered white rice or flavoured rice. The choice was simple in fact. We were given chili sauce and sweet sour sauce as condiments for the BBQ pork and roasted duck. When my drink was served, I thought it would be in porcelein bowl, but it was in cup and it was cold. Fortunately, it wasn’t all bad. The content was more than the drink itself, which made it worth the RM6+ (incl tax and all). I’ve got no idea what does the wine menu doing in a Chinese restaurant. I thought they only serve Chinese wines.

We were served a plate of pickled papaya while waiting for our food. DL wasn’t too sure if it was papaya. I guess the colour doesn’t look right. Anyway, after soaking in vinegar for so many weeks, I guess oneself wouldn’t be able to distinguish itself from the rest of the pickled papayas or mangoes. As long as it doesn’t taste bad, it goes into my mouth. Pretty sour and crunchy, unfortunately we can’t finish it. I guess they gave quite a lot.

When the BBQ pork and roasted duck was served, the glimmering BBQ pork looked damn tasty. I could hear them calling to me. Though I noticed some fats on it, which kinda put me off. When I picked the 1st piece, which was mainly covered in red sauce with some fats in it, I would want to take back my words about the unappetizing fats. It was crunchy! It was heavenly! The fats weren’t smelly at all. DL can’t stop praising on the BBQ pork, how great it was and stuff. It tasted even better than the Meng Kee I had in Glenmarie. Just that it wasn’t all 1/2 fat 1/2 lean meat. Basically, that piece of heavenly fat BBQ pork melts in my mouth, with its sweetened sauce… *drooling*

On the other hand, the roasted duck was only so-so. Probably the BBQ pork was too good, it made the duck pales in comparison. The herbs taste was not heavy in the duck, a bit too light though. I didn’t realised it was supposed to have herbs in it until I had my 2nd piece. Then I recalled I have had roasted ducks with heavier herbs taste, which I supposed was better. The belacan style water spinach was pretty good. I never thought places like these would cook such nice homey feel kind of belacan style water spinach. I give it a 9/10 and it only cost RM9 per plate. It was not small portion either!

Later, while we were busy indulging ourselves, we were being pestered on any last order because they were closing the kitchen. They did this 3 times. I asked DL if he has ordered any roasted pork, he said “no” because I’ve just had roasted pork yesterday. Hence I asked him to get a roasted pork. What would it made us for leaving the place without trying out the King of Roast’s roasted pork? Yes, it made us the soggy pigs.

Anyway, the roasted pork was served within minutes after the weird condiments, mustard and sugar. I let DL tastes it first. He was rather disappointing at the roasted pork. Basically, he has already spoiled all the anticipations for me. Skin failed but meat pretty good. So, I could’ve guessed. I’d take the skin from Mooi Mooi‘s roasted pork and fusion it with Canton Fare’s roasted pork meat. It would make a perfect combination. The skin was still crunchy, but it lacked the fragrance I could get from Mooi Mooi’s. Like he said, the meat was nicely seasoned and flavoured though. But it could’ve been better, for something more premium.

We left the place satisfied, with some leftovers though. The lunch was VERY nice. I would’ve rated it higher if the roasted duck and roasted pork weren’t there to spoil the lunch. I could’ve asked for more BBQ pork. To hell with the fats, “Eat First, Die Later,” as Doc always say. I guess the place should change its name to “King of BBQ pork” instead.

When my cappucino was served, I was so reluctant to stir it, because the toppings looked kinda nice. Later, I was reluctant to put sugar because I thought it would taste like Vienna Coffee from PHOP. Result, I almost spit out my cappu because it was basically tasteless. So I ended up downing a pack of Equal artificial sugar. Felt way too sweet. Should have held back as I knew that pack of aspartame is very sweet, just that I was too lazy to deliberate any further cause it was so noisy there.

We were surprised by the arrival of garlic breads later. It was the courtesy of our sponsor for making sure we were not too hungry waiting for our food. The garlic bread was being chomped down within minutes. They were quite good actually, with the crispy crust. Then there were the fries, served with mayo and chili sauce. I had only a few because the first stick of fries almost melted my fingers. Besides, I was eagerly waiting for my lamb stew.

Firstly, I get a taste of CM’s Spicy Prawn Olio. It was good, though a tad too spicy. I’d come back for that someday, definitely. Then there’s KWS’ Chicken Pie, which looked like a headcrab at first. Minutes later, it appears as if the brain juice got sucked out, if there’s even any brain juice to begin with. Then came my lamb stew. I thought it would be something soupy. Then I realised it was just an overpriced item from nasi kandar place. Yes, it’s called “rendang kambing”. *bhhhekkkk*

Last item was AC’s beef burger. It looked really good and it has a sunny side up egg hidden inside the stack. I managed to got a piece of the delicious looking beef burger. Despite it was well done (where the waiter didn’t have the courtesy to ask in the first place), the meat was tender, soft yet juicy. I was impressed by it actually. Something that’s worth coming back for. Perhaps DL might like this as an alternative to his favourite burger from Chili’s.

There are now at least 2 items on the menu that would my revisit.
