Fried Bittergourd

... according to MSF, these were fried bittergourd. Though they weren't bitter at all.

Rating: 6/10

The place was packed with crowds. The people keep coming and going, throughout lunch hours. MSF told us that they don’t use MSG in their food, hence the mildly flavoured gravies and stuff. The lamb was like quite normal, though the curry chicken was nice and tender. The fried chicken was disappointing. Fried fish egg was something new to me, though I don’t really like it. As for my favourite fried squids, it was pretty… tastely. Not salted at all.

The bill came up to RM80 for the 4 of us. Seems pretty steep for the amount of food served.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio

... spaghetti aglio olio, as stated on the menu.

Rating: 6.5/10

PG said the aglio olio spaghetti here was not bad. I also spotted it on the menu few nights ago, but always forgot to try it out when I reach DoReMi. So tonight I purposely come and try it out. For an olio costing only RM5, I think it’s pretty decent. Plenty of chopped garlic. Get your gum ready though, cause you’ll be going down 1 stinkin’ path.

This was probably the best roasted pork I’ve had in Klang Valley. It beats my favourite roasted pork at Mooi Mooi. The lean meat was so tender and it seriously melts in the mouth. Despite the crispy skin, it melts as it touches my saliva. The taste and fragrance of the lard filled my mouth immediately, just like a nuclear explosion. Each slice of the roasted pork cost RM13.50. We had 3 slices and the meal cost RM51.10. Even the 10c was being charge by the lady instead of waiving it off for convenience sake. What the…

If Indonesia was having a Richter 7.9 of quake, this could easily shakes my world with a Richter scale of 9.7!

A must try!

On a side note, I’ve read a blog comparing this to the roasted pork in Mooi Mooi, saying that the service here was very lousy and bad. I went there quite early and the roasted pork was still being prepared. The boss was so kind enough to actually waited for me to snap a photo of the 3 pieces of delicious roasted pork before he continues his work. The service was ok, probably because there weren’t many people the time I was there. It was Sunday morning after all. Perhaps I’ll try to go again on weekdays to feel the wrath of bad service as mentioned by the blogger.

This place was on our KIV list for a long time, finally today I could give it a try together with DL. Unfortunately, MH wasn’t able to join us. We ordered quite a number of dishes in order to prevent the sky from raining further. Firstly, we have the Japanese escargot in butter garlic sauce. DL almost puke, but fortunately there were some garlic in it to engulf the butter taste in it. Anyway, he soaked himself in jalapeno later on. San Francisco SteakHouse’s butter garlic escargot has better sauce than this at any given time!

Then the 4 heavenly vegetables were served. It was rather sticky and gooey. The cod fish was very disappointing. Probably the worst cod fish I’ve ever had. It was like a piece of elastic rubber. Yes, the cod fish was practically ruined. We ended up having balance of the fish on the plate. DL was so enjoying the clay pot curry chicken, not because it was nice, but it was hot. He said it’s nice to have hot stuff like this during cold weather. We should have gone to Seafood Ler for clay pot curry fish instead.

Finally, the crabs were not fresh, according to DL. I managed to have a pincer which was rather sweet and an acceptable leg part. Though my second leg part was not fresh, just like how he claimed.

I guess this is the place that I’d never go back to, even if I’m hungry.

Bazaar, Seremban

After our heavy breakfast, we went hunting for dessert as according to the magazine. Boy, the place was hard to locate before it was not POI on my GPS map. Fortunately, we managed to find it by asking the local though.

While still quite full from the breakfast, I took on a whole bowl of ais kacang. The syrup used was rather exquisite. It was quite nice, though it was very sweet too. Be sure to drink a lot of water after that. EL was saying that, instead of normal sugar syrup, a kind of herbal syrup (八寶) was used. Worth a try as it was different from what I usually get, and it doesn’t come with the weird or bad after taste like those I had in KV. lol

Wet Market, Seremban

Rushed to Seremban early this morning for some breakfast in the wet market. According to AT’s eating magazine, there were some nice food stalls there worth trying.

This vermicelli was quite different from what I usually have. Instead of clear soup, I was served with a brownish soup, which was quite salty in its nature. Then there were some cuttlefish strips and best of all, those sliced porks. The vermicelli itself was not very well prepared. It has the smell of raw vermicelli, which I don’t like. The sliced porks were very nice marinated. I guess I could just eat that all day long. Should have been called the marinated pork vermicelli instead.

AT went to order a bowl of beef noodle. She mistakenly ordered the soup noodle, instead of the dried one, which was recommended by the magazine. I had a few sips of the soup, which was very plain and watery, unlike any beef noodle’s soup I’ve had. I heard the noodle was home made too. I supposed that was to attracts more people to try it out with the notion that it was healthier? Anyway, I give it a zero because a bowl of beef noodle from Teppanyaki would’ve tasted much better. Perhaps it was her trick of leaving something behind, so we could have something to yearn for on our next visit.

I was quite tempted by the rojak’s photos in the magazine. AT said it was just a few stalls away from the stall selling vermicelli. Despite feeling a little full already, I went ahead to try it out. How often would I be visiting the wet market so early in the morning, let alone the one in Seremban’s? I was glad I did went ahead and be a glutton. This rojak (pasembur) was unlike any of those that I find in KV. It was served with pork (not the meat) in it and has five-spice powder in it, which made the gravy so special. Though it was quite spicy by comparison. Something worth a second try or takeaway.

I’m not a big fan of Hakka Mee, but since it was highly recommended, we went ahead and gave it a try. Initial impression was, it was very salty. I felt a slight tingling on my tongue. I was guessing it was due to the used of alkaline in the preparation of the noodle or it has way too much salty. Somehow EL and AT can’t feel that, but they loved the soup on the beef noodle though. My comment for this noodle? It was nothing extraordinary as I could get similar stuff in Glenmarie.

That’s about wrap it up for our breakfast in Seremban. A day which I woke up so early and I still can’t believe it myself.

PS: will update the stall numbers when I got them from EL or AT.

Cia Xiang Seafood Restaurant, Bukit Tambun

This place was recommended to me by a fellow colleague, cause he came across a flogger’s article regarding the food here and thought I might be interested to give it a try. On the day we were heading back to KV, we stopped by here for lunch, sacrificing the much talked about yam rice, which was not far away.

The vegetable, similar to our dinner last night, was very small in portion. Fortunately, it wasn’t as salty as the one we had last night. The spare ribs cooked in Guinness Stout was rather disappointing. I would be expecting it to be better than those I could find in KV, unfortunately, it has plenty of fats or skins. I can’t really distinguish if they were fats or skins under those colour, which made the whole chewing experience really bad. Besides, the taste wasn’t that good either. Any one of those Guinness Stout spare ribs I had in KV is better than this.

Everyone seems to be ordering the same thing, the clay pot crab rice. Unfortunately, it doesn’t taste any good at all. The rice, which seemed similar to other clay pot rice, darkened with soya sauce. Somehow, the rice was tasteless to me. With the crabs being placed on top of the rice and cooked in the clay pot, I was expecting the rice to have the sweetness of the crab’s essence. Similar to the fried vermicelli with crab, which made the whole vermicelli smells very crabby. When I have the crab, the meat was tasteless too. I’m not sure if it was due to the lacked of freshness of the crab, or the crab just crappy. Meat wise, they certainly wasn’t that bad, but it just tasteless. I wondered what happened.

Lastly, the fish was still acceptable. Somehow, the choi bou was not crispy. Maybe they turned soggy after I took my photos? The bill came up to RM92 for the 5 of us, which took us completely off guard, as our dinner last night cost us only RM101.

The order was made based on CK Lam’s recommendations at What2See. Somehow, I’m sensing that she shares the same sentiment with KY Speaks when it comes to food.

Asam Laksa @ Pasar Air Itam, Penang Island

After our long awaiting snack at Lorong Selamat. We head on straight to Pasar Air Itam’s laksa. MH was craving for it as well. He told me that is a must try when we were on our way to Penang the day before. Despite the warnings of the place was famous of using tissue paper in boiling the soup, I just had to take the risk.

The taste of the soup was what I would be expecting from an asam laksa. Similar to my hometown’s asam laksa where there’s no pineapple. Though there were quite a bit of jalapeno being used here. Unfortunately, according to MH, if we were to be there in the morning, there would be more mackerel in the bowl of noodle, as opposed to none at all when we had it. Except for some minced leftover fish meat sinking at the bottom of the pot. Anyway, there weren’t any visible tissue paper particles found in the soup.

Char Koay Teow @ Kafe Heng Huat, Lorong Selamat, Penang Island

Finally, the place where people would say phrase like, “you’ve not visited Penang if you haven’t been there.” Yes, the infamous Lorong Selamat’s fried kuey teow. Before I was even there, EL has been telling me how Penangites would never patronise that place due to its exuberant charges on a plate of fried kuey teow with bigger than usual prawns. Anyway, according to my GPS’ Point of Interest, the description was “a diva with red cap and goggle.” That’s intriguing.

It took us more than 90 minutes for our 4 plates of fried kuey teow. Apparently, they have fucked up the order, despite having the plates stacked in chronological order. When our fried kuey teow was served, the most apparent thing would be the 3 big prawns lying on top of the flat noodles. Fragrance wise, it wasn’t anything fancy. Fortunately, the taste was good. It wasn’t as salty as the one I had last night and the fragrance from the pork lard was good. As for the price of the dish, it was RM6.80 for a small sized one. I have had no complains because I don’t have it often. Since I was a tourist there, I guess I have to do what a tourist gotta do. At least the taste was good despite all the waiting.

Mee Goreng @ Seng Lee Coffee Shop, Lorong Bangkok, Penang Island

This was one of the eating places that recommended by EL. His first remark was, “Those Indian guys can speak fluent Hokkien.” I find it rather amusing and got no idea what I was getting into, but I could only pray for the best. Some of them asked if it was spicy, but so far in my life, I’ve never had a mamak/Indian’s mee goreng which is spicy or very spicy.

The reddish appearance was quite surprising for all of us. I guess this only exclusively available in Penang. Taste wise, it was quite nice, a little bit sweetened. The chilli wasn’t spicy, but it tends to burn the mouth after consuming it. I guess it was like mee rebus, but the noodle was stir fried along with the gravy until the gravy was dried. In conclusion, something different than your usual stuff. Not sure if this is Halal or not, didn’t pay attention to any Halal certification on the stall or the shop.
