Lunch @ Home

I thought I’d have breakfast or lunch at Restoran CS after my shopping in 1 Utama. They would have stopped serving roti telur by the time I reach there. So I decided to just head home and cook what I bought instead. Then watch some movies while having my lunch.

This pack of noodle cost around RM3.80 each, if I’m not mistaken. It’s almost double the size of normal instant noodles such as Maggi/Mamee/Cintan. When I read the instructions, it stated that it has to be boiled for 4-5 minutes. As usual, I pour in all the ingredients except the noodle into the water and wait for it to heat up first. Then when the water was boiling, I load in the noodle and cook it. I think I spent like almost 10 minutes there.

At first, I sorta lost my appetite looking at the size after I’ve cut it opened. Then I suddenly stopped feeling hungry looking at the sheer size of the dried noodle and the fragrance of it wasn’t exactly appetizing. Anyhow, since I’ve opened it and I was indeed hungry at that time, so I proceed with the cooking. Fortunately, the result was quite good. The soup was quite spicy actually and it has Maggi’s kind of saltiness level, which I like. Unfortunately, the so called “hot mushroom” flavor, all I got was “hot” (spicy) part of it. It was nothing mushy about the soup at all. So, I’ll skip this from my shopping list next time.

Aside from my little home-lunch today that I’ve planned, I bought myself a pleasant dessert as well. Something which is rather costly to be taken as a habitual meal. It’s …

TADA!!!

... I ordered dessert as well, what a complete lunch.

I fell in love with Cinnabon the first time I had it. It was few years back when my gf brought 1 back after her duty. She said it was given by her colleagues. It was nice, especially nice when she shared it with me. Hence, I sorta got stuck with only Pecanbon from then on.

The soft bread on it, the fragrance from the cinnamon powder that goes around the bread and then the pecan, which I really like. There was plenty of condensed milk too. It’s a little diabetic, but I don’t take it on daily basis. So I guess it’s alright to be on the sweet side. Perhaps that’s part of their business direction. To stop their customers from coming back everyday, rather come back on weekly basis.

HBP EL said, it’s fine to eat BBQ Chicken because they are healthy. In fact, I believe he was quoting me. It’s all thanks to the olive oil in it. This time, they didn’t screw up and serve us something with ants in it. Somehow, the chili sauce tasted fucked up. I’ll keep in mind not to touch their chili sauce next time.

Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant, NZX

My colleague heard about my visit to Daorae the other day and she was tempted to give it a try, since it’s only nearby. I thought it was her first time visiting Daorae because of her enthusiasm. I later found out that she actually went to the Taipan outlet a couple of weeks earlier.

The instant noodle boiled in kimchi soup was nice. The soup was especially nice though it was very costly for 2 pieces of instant noodle and some flour made of I-dunno-what-are-they thingy dancing in the soup. My colleagues commented that the one they had in Taipan was much better with fresher pork and thinly sliced. I’ve to give the Taipan’s outlet a try someday to verify that claim. While in the meantime, happy grilling!

This was what became of the spoon. The residue of the hot corn soup got stuck onto the cold spoon. The soup was quite nice. It was like taking Twisties, sans all the flavouring, blend it with some water. There you go, a corn soup!

Fortunately, I recalled MyStyle has SMS promotion for BBQ Chicken. I took the best bargain, which is buy 1 set and free another set. But according to the staff there, the free set doesn’t come with any drinks. So the drink has to be ordered separately. Well, fair enough, RM3.50 SMS for a set which cost around RM10.

They were quite satisfied with this meal. Something new to them while this being my 3rd time to BBQ Chicken, if I’m not mistaken. The drumsticks were oily as I break through the crunchy skin. It was olive oil, I guess it’s healthy to consume them. As usual, the taste was good on the outisde but the meat was just barely cooked, despite the long wait.

Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant, NZX

Today was a colleague’s birthday. So, 4 of us went to have lunch together in a Korean restaurant. Initially, I suggested Nam Dae Mun at the underground parking entrance of NZX. Thanks to the laziness of the owner of the place, it was closed when we were there, hence we adjourned to Daorae instead, which was newly opened for less than a week. The place is located right above of Hollys Coffee. I wondered if they were both owned by the same company.

I’ve heard of Daorae a couple of years back. EL recommended it to me but he also complained that it was very expensive, aside from the free flow of variety of condiments which were probably enough to make you fill your hungry stomach.

… the place is new. I could practically smell the new paint. It was probably good as I don’t need to order liquor to get myself all high.

… corn tea, which tasted more like malt to me.

… the cooking pot, where a bowl of burning charcoals was placed into it.

… from left to right, chili paste, salt soaked in sesame oil and runny sesame oil. The sesame oil given was very watery type, unlike those you get from stores.

… complimentary soup but mine doesn’t have any lala in it.

… a vacuum cleaner to made the environment friendly to the patrons.

… grilling iron is placed. I wasn’t fast enough to get a good shot of the burning charcoals.

… a bowl of raw garlic was placed on top of the grill. I thought it was meant to be cooked by the heat from the grill.

… the variety of condiments, 10 to be exact.

… spring onion prepared with sesame oil.

… our first serving, pork.

… almost there. I was so hungry and the wait was killing me.

… they are now cut into pieces for easier consumptions.

… kimchi soup with pork strips.

… I-don’t-know-what was this, but it has 3 balls of noodle.

… dip your pork in the salt & sesame condiment, put them onto the raw vegetable. Put some chili paste in it …

… some spring onions and bamboo shoots from the 10 choices of condiments. Add in a piece of raw garlic. Roll it and stuff the whole into your mouth. Ahhh… heavenly!

… squid from the plate of I-don’t-know-what.

… this was a complimentary Korean style pancake, given free by the lady boss. I thought of ordering this earlier, fortunately we didn’t place the order.

… these were what left of the charcoal after we have finished grilling our raw meat. The grill was replaced 2 times.

… the cooked lamb meat was placed on the grill to retain their heat after everything was over.

Rating: 8/10

It was good, really really GOOD! I didn’t expect it to turns out so nice. The combination was bizarre at first but they were really nice despite how you mix them around. Probably 1 or 2 of the combination were abomination, but you’ll learn quick enough not to repeat the same mistakes.

The pork meat we ordered was not marinated, but it turns out really nice after it was nicely grilled. The fats really made wonder to the meat or probably the waiter did a good job on grilling them. I had a lot of pork including those that were really fat. I cringe at the thought of putting it in my mouth, let alone eating it. But I tried anyway and it has the fried pork lard fragrance. I sort of got addicted, needless to say. My colleague stopped me from eating more as she knew too well that these were really unhealthy.

The lamb was marinated. It was sweet and tender. I wished I could have more. The condiments, not all were good. I didn’t really like the kimchi but the spring onion really, spring out of its place. It was awesome. I think I could have a whole bowl of rice with just the spring onion. The cold tea was a good complement as these BBQ food was really dry. A good thirst quencher, much better than this.

The service was really good, we were being attended really well. Besides, we don’t need to get our hands dirty. All you have to do is to get busy, eating. A well worth 10% service charge that I’d gladly pay. Though the bill was rather steep as it came up to RM186 for 4 pax. Anyway, I believe there will be a 2nd time visit for me as I would like to try out the beef next time.

PS: When on the way back, I saw memo notice stated that, bring along the bill from Daorae, I’m eligible for buy-1-free-1 drinks in Hollys Coffee, which is just right below. Though it doesn’t clearly state that whether I should only bring bill of the same day or not.

BBQ Chicken, Taipan Triangle

Despite my bad experience on my maiden visit to BBQ Chicken, I decided to give it a go this time when my colleague suggested to go for BBQ Chicken as dinner. We called EL along and he called his gf as well. That made up to the 6 of us, including LGJ, whom rarely join us for dinner.

… I’ve scrutinized this cup of drink and its straw very carefully in order not to suck a whole colony of ants into my mouth.

… mango juice against a yellow shirt, EL’s gf.

… DC the potato lover, ordered 8 mashed potatoes. The so-called mashed potatoes weren’t that nice but the gravy was appetizing. Fortunately, they were really hungry and eat like vultures, hence we don’t have any mashed potatoes leftovers.

… Teri-Q fried chicken. I wanted to take a picture of the whole plate of 6 Teri-Q chicken, but those vultures were too fast handed. This was all I got.

… DC’s favourite, Korean Charbroiled.

… the not nice fries which we couldn’t get rid of when placing our orders.

… Jerk chicken. Similar to Korean Charbroiled but it has bones instead.

… I think this was called “Pat Su Bing” or something. Korean style ais kacang.

… lastly, an extra order of chicken strips. These were really nice, came with a bowl of mild mustard.

Rating: 7/10

Despite me telling DC that Teri-Q was nicer than Korean Charbroiled, he still insisted on ordering the 8-piece Korean Charbroiled Family set, while we only had 1 piece of Teri-Q chicken each. The Jerk Chicken was nothing to should about, it tasted the same as Korean Charbroiled, except it has bones in it. They all said that it was nicer than the charbroiled instead. Teri-Q chicken was fried till crisp but not charred. It remained crunchy despite being served for 10 minutes. I wonder did they user straw in their oil technique.

The dessert was being vultured by they rest of them as well. Fortunate enough, I don’t think I could finish it alone either. It contains abundance of red beans, which was my favourite part of the dessert. There were some nata de coco as well as slices of peach, if I’m not mistaken. Surprisingly, it even contains muachi! Not exactly the kind of stuff I’d want in my ais kacang.

I’d definitely want another 1 or 2 more of Teri-Q chicken! 2 more chicken strips wouldn’t hurt either. Since they were fried with olive oil, I don’t think it would be that bad. BTW, the bill came up to RM172+ inclusive of all the useless taxes.

BBQ Chicken, Taipan Triangle

Tonight I suggested to eat BBQ Chicken, because I haven’t had the chance to try it. The specialty of BBQ Chicken is that the foods were actually healthy, because they were cooked or fried in olive oil. There was 1 outlet at NZX that was really near my home. Unfortunately, it has closed down as I checked the website, that particular outlet was unlisted. Initially, there were only 6 of us going for the dinner, then other colleagues joined in as well and that made us 8 pax.

When we were heading there, I wasn’t sure where exactly the shop was located. I tried to look for it in my GPS but I can’t seem to find it. So we decided to just try our luck by searching for it blindly in Taipan. Luckily, we found it soon we entered Taipan Triangle. We ordered the Korean Charbroiled Family set which were 8 pieces of chicken meat marinated in natural sauce and Teri-Q Stick Family set where 8 pieces of drumsticks marinated in teriyaki sauce.

… the combos seemed like very good bargains.

… benefits of olive oil printed on the paper, distributed to each tables.

… it was empty the time we reached there. There were only 2 patrons seated on the outside.

… my cup of 7up which came with the family set that we ordered.

… unfortunately, my straw was the habitat of a colony of red ants. These were what I spat out after finding out that those pieces of stuff in my mouth were ants and NOT sugar.

… some of the lucky ones still survive.

… coleslaw and fries that came with the set. Both of them weren’t nice though.

… Korean Charbroiled.

… half of Teri-Q sticks and half of Original Chicken. Apparently, they ran out of Teri-Q sticks, so we were compensated with 1/2 of Original Chicken. Does our bill get discounted as well?

… fresh? Tender, definitely.

… chili sauce in little bowl ala TGIF’s style.

… remember the logo, don’t go there unless you are an armadillo.

Rating: 5/10

I’m very reluctant to give any ratings to my first ever experience in BBQ Chicken. I was having high expectations on them as DC said it was very nice. The food was nice. They were up to or probably beyond my expectation. The meat were tender, the taste was right on spot. I would’ve rated the food itself a good 8.5/10. I liked the Korean Charbroiled, I liked the Teri-Q sticks even more. Most, if not all of their outlets provide free WiFi access to the internet, which is a plus point. Especially when you have to wait so long for your food, you can do some surfing on the net. They even provide delivery service, but not all outlets has the scooters.

Unfortunately, I was treated as an armadillo because I was served ants as appetizer. I seriously do not fucking know what the management of this halal restaurant was thinking. They were too poor to pay for pesticide services? I wished I could go there again, with a peace of mind. Now I have had to keep reminding myself to check the straws before sucking it, all the time. In case you wanna know if I was compensated with anything. It’s NONE. Just pathetic.

PS: I’ve tried sending a feedback to BBQ Chicken on their website. It said that I would be responded within 24 hours. It’s been 26 hours and I’ve yet to receive any email or calls from them. So much for good customer service. Probably they were busy pulling the plug to evade from my lawsuit?

Restoran Tak Fok Hong Kong Seafood, Kepong

Once upon a time, my colleague ajaked me to go for crabs eating. So, I said OK-lor. How she found out about this place leh? It was because, she was here 2 weeks ago. She said the crabs were very cheap, at RM18/kilo. Well, although I wasn’t really a crab eater, but I anyhow agreed to her lor since she ajaked. When the day came, I thought we would have other people to join us, unfortunately it just ended up with only just the 2 of us. On that day itself hor, her husband outstation, so hor she fong-karm (out-of-jail) lor.

But then, I very the chum (poor) one, she wut me belanja her eat crabs. Then ok-lor, how much can she eat woh, so kicimiao, right? Summore leh it was cheap ma, like she claimed. But hor, I had to drive woh. So, boh bian lor, she’s my boss’ wife woh, what to do, right? *giggle*

DISCLAIMER: No, this is not balls licking. Anyhow, she doesn’t even have balls laaaa…

… got jalapeño woh! But dunno got chance to eat it or not, because we didn’t order rice leh.

… the boiled peanuts were quite good. I get to eat the whole thing because she doesn’t eat it.

… mang tao, yummy! I love these. I could eat them just like that. It’s soft and sweetened inside with crispy crust.

… essential tools for crabbing.

… I will tell you why is this plate of vegetable here.

… something I reserved for my vegetable.

… when she told me about “cheese crab”, I thought she meant milk & cheese (奶油) crab. Boy, I was surprised! It was indeed cheese! Milky cheese, more cheese than milk. It has bits of onions in it, but not very noticeable, due to the colour of the gravy.

… sweet and sour crab is like the first and must have when you order crabs at places that’s famous for crabs. I guess the reason would be, “at least you’d have a lot of gravy for your rice or buns to soak with.”

… yummy! This was like the 5th buns I had and I was very full!

… the aftermath. I was very tired.

Rating: 5.5/10

Some of you may ask lor, why the rating so low? Well, let me tell you the story har

The RM18/kg crab was all craps! You can’t order just the crab alone at RM18/kg. Each kilo of crabs, you had to order another accompanying dish, which would be higher than normal price, to contra back their losses on the crabs, crap! So, this is how the plate of vegetable came into view. We ordered a small sized vegetable, so we are eligible for ordering a 1/2kg crabs for RM9. No, you can’t get a full 1kg crabs at discounted price. So ended up, we ordered a 1/2kg cheese crabs for RM9. Fortunately she warned me that I might not like the cheese crab. I indeed do have my reserve on eating the cheese crab, because it was just plain weird to me, having to eat it for the first time.

Then we ordered a kg of sweet and sour crabs for normal price, at RM28/kg. Boy, was I fooled? And I thought we could order at least 3 to 4 flavours of crabs, but they don’t serve mixed flavour. My colleague wanted the salted egg yolk crab as well and I wanted a kam heong. There was another stupid rule, they don’t serve 1/2kg of crabs. Our cheese crabs was exception because we ordered a small vegetable and the lady boss somehow have HAD to gave us the discount that we were eligible for. Unfortunately, I don’t remember how much was that vege. Probably RM16 or so, doubled the price that you could get from other place.

Flavour wise, I have no complain, but the sweet and sour could be better. As for the cheese, I wouldn’t go for it because it was just weird. Not that it was so bad, but it tends to make you feel full, probably kills your appetite real quick. The buns were great though. The only thing that I wouldn’t complain. We even ordered a 2nd plate of buns, unfortunately I had to plonk down the rest of the buns, which means I had swallowed a total of 7 buns! 2 more didn’t survive long enough to reach my mouth.

I ended up paying close to RM60 for the bill and I had to eat at least a whole kg worth of crabs. Usually, people would say “人出錢,你出力”, but this time, it’s “我出錢,我出力”.

Location: N3.21111 E101.61528

After the dinner, I said I cannot tahan already. I wanted to drink coffee to flush down the craps. Since my place there opened a new coffee shop, so I forced her to stick with me. But hey, she doesn’t need to pay a penny leh, so don’t complain la.

… newly opened Hollys Coffee, a Korean’s product. They provide free WiFi access too.

… the environment was cozy and by far the brightest ever coffee shop around, compared with SFCC, Coffee Bean and Starbucks.

… my ice blended mocha and her orange juice. What the… came to coffee place for a cup of orange juice!?

… we were served complimentary glutinous rice (mochi / 麻糬) that comes in 4 colours. I wonder do they represent the 4 seasons.

… it was the 2nd day after the grand opening. I was presented with the buy 1 free 1 complimentary voucher for their grand opening.

Rating: 5.5/10

We were seated on the inside for a short while until we started to feel cold from the air-conditioner at full blast. Then we moved ourselves to the outside seats. It was a calm evening, barely any wind, luckily it wasn’t hot either. During that time, she popped a cigarette and I gave her a stern look. Then I told her, “it was a special day, yesterday” and stare blank to the horizon, pretend to be sensible. She was thinking for a while about the date and asked, “what’s so special?” and she gave a few tries on guessing for the answer. Finally, I told her the answer, “it was Jacky’s birthday…” Then she “cheh-ed” me. Sucks!

I was asking myself, “would I patronize this place again for their coffee?” the moment I had my first seep into my cup of mocha. It doesn’t taste awful, but I didn’t expect the Koreans to like coffee that lacks coffee fragrance. I’m putting this up into the list where Coffee Beans and Starbucks reside in. But since it was so convenient, just a stone throw away (literally) from my place, I might stop by for their comfy environment and their free WiFi access, though the internet connection provided was rather slow. Very much slower compared to the line from Station 1 Cafe, which was only a 100 metres away from Hollys Coffee.
